This week on The Monday Morning Mojo Podcast we took a look at the importance and real meaning of self-care and today I’m doing an even deeper dive into what self-care really is (and isn’t), why it’s so important, and practical tips to incorporate it into your everyday life.

What Is Self-Care (And What It Isn’t)?

When you think of self-care, you might immediately picture a day at the spa, a long bath, or a meditation session. While those are lovely examples, self-care goes far beyond pampering activities. It’s about taking deliberate actions to care for your physical, emotional, and mental health. 

Here’s what self-care is not:

  • Selfish: Self-care often gets mistaken for self-indulgence or selfishness, but it’s actually the opposite. By taking time for yourself, you’re replenishing your energy so you can continue to give and support others effectively.
  • Just Pampering: While massages and bubble baths are great, self-care is about more than temporary relaxation. It’s about creating habits that support your overall well-being consistently.

Here’s what self-care is:

  • Intentional: It’s a conscious decision to put yourself at the top of your own list and meet your needs so you can show up fully for others.
  • Holistic: It covers a broad range of activities that cater to your mental, emotional, and physical health. From setting boundaries to practicing positive self-talk, self-care encompasses everything that helps you thrive.
  • Ongoing: It’s not a one-time event but a continuous commitment to making choices that nurture and sustain your well-being.

Why Is Self-Care So Important?

Think about it like this: you can’t serve from an empty vessel. If you’re constantly pouring your energy into taking care of others—whether it’s family, work, or community—without refilling your own cup, you’ll eventually run dry.
