Wanderlust and Wisdom: How Experiences Shape Us and Why They Matter

Oct 30, 2024

If you had the choice to spend some money on a designer bag or watch or on creating an amazing experience for yourself and others, what would you choose?

Research suggests that spending money on experiences rather than things may be the key to deeper, more lasting satisfaction and I deep dive into this idea in this week’s Monday Morning Mojo Podcast.

Memories created through travel, gatherings, and shared moments last much longer than the satisfaction we might get from a new possession. Experiences offer a sense of connection and fulfillment that can be difficult to find elsewhere. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, an intimate dinner with loved ones, or even a trip halfway across the world, these moments often become the stories we cherish most.

For me, experiences like travel and hosting gatherings have become passions. My husband and I look forward to planning exciting trips every year. Sometimes our trips include friends or family. There’s something deeply fulfilling in crafting these experiences that we can share.

Memorable moments, whether it’s curating a cozy dinner party at home with delicious food, good company, and beautiful decor, or creating memories on an adventure. These connections not only bring joy to us but also to those we share them with.

Recently, I checked off a significant destination from my bucket list: South Africa. It was everything I imagined and more. We explored the vineyards, took in the Cape of Good Hope, and even experienced an unforgettable safari. From lions to leopards, we were lucky enough to see the “Big Five” animals. The people of South Africa, resilient and welcoming, left an indelible impression on me, showing a level of kindness and strength that truly touched my heart. They demonstrated the beauty of rising above hardship, inspiring me to embrace and celebrate life in new ways.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip came during a visit to a farmers market in Zimbabwe, where we learned about the local people’s entrepreneurial spirit despite high unemployment. Our guide gave each of us five dollars to buy produce, which we later donated to a nearby elderly care home. It was a humbling experience that reminded us how even the smallest acts of generosity can have a big impact. The gratitude from both the vendors and the elderly care home staff was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and compassion.

What does this all mean for us? It’s a reminder that meaningful experiences are always within reach, whether they involve travel, a heartfelt gathering, or a small act of kindness. These moments bring us closer to each other and help us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves. That gives us a sense of purpose and fulfillment that just can’t be bought.

I hope this inspires you to consider how an investment in creating experiences will result in wonderful memories that will last a lifetime and deepen connections to your inner self and others. Start with a small list of things you’d love to do or places you’d love to go. Whether you’re 20 or 100, making time for meaningful experiences can enrich your life in ways that go beyond words.

Remember, experiences don’t just shape us—they connect us, inspire us and help us leave a positive mark on the world around us. So, what will your next great experience be?
